The Ohio State Buckeyes dropped a couple of spots in the NCAA football rankings, and they may be without their best offensive player on Saturday, when they head to the Coliseum for a huge matchup with top-ranked USC. If Chris “Beanie” Wells cannot go, expect a shift in the Ohio State vs. USC betting line.
No.5 Ohio State (2-0) at No.1 USC (1-0) – Saturday, September 13, 8:00 PM ET
The Buckeyes struggled to a 26-14 win over Ohio at home, and it was clearly obvious how badly they missed Wells in the backfield. No Buckeye rushed for over 50 yards, and the Ohio State offense could not go long as Todd Boeckman was 16-for-26 for only 110 yards. If it was not for a defense that forced five turnovers, we could be looking at an Ohio State team that fell out of the top 25. For a team that has been in the BCS title game the past two seasons (albeit in losing causes), Ohio State almost made a slew of folks who bet on college football look really bad.
The Trojans should be well rested after hammering Virginia 52-7 on the road on August 30th. The USC offense rolled up 558 yards on the Cavaliers, and quarterback Mark Sanchez showed no signs of rust after missing preseason with a knee injury, as he went 26-of-35 for 338 yards and three touchdowns with a pick. Not only that, the USC defense forced four turnovers, including three fumble recoveries. With that type of performance, it is easy to see why the Trojans have the No.1 ranking and the best NCAA football futures odds in the nation.
The USC vs. Ohio State odds are stacked in the Trojans’ favor as USC are 10.5-point favorites at home. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel announced on Thursday that Wells is doubtful for this massive game, but he could be just playing head games with his USC counterpart, Pete Carroll. However, Wells will surely be less than 100%, and this does not bode well for Ohio State’s chances.
