The 2011-12 bowl schedule kicks off on Saturday, December 17th at University Stadium, where the Temple Owls will engage in NCAA football betting warfare with the Wyoming Cowboys in the 2011 New Mexico Bowl.
If you're a fan of running the football, this is the game for you. The Owls and the Cowboys combined for over 440 yards per game on the ground this year, and there should be at least 60 to 70 rushes on the game.
Temple seems to have the upper hand in this one because of the way that it dominates the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Opponents have a tough time getting anything going against this team. The Owls are averaging allowing just 122.6 yards per game on the ground, and they are one of the top units in the land in terms of yards per carry at just 3.6.
On offense though, look out for all of the running backs that Head Coach Steve Adazio deploys. RB Bernard Pierce is the workhorse of the bunch. He rumbled 248 times this season and ended the year with 1,381 yards and 25 TDs. However, RB Matt Brown and QB Chris Coyer, who comes in and runs the Wildcat offense frequently, combined for 1,358 yards and eight scores between them as well.
Wyoming's rushing attack involves the quarterback a heck of a lot more. QB Brett Smith, who is one of the many freshman signal callers playing in bowls this year, had 666 rushing yards and 10 TDs this year, while leading rusher RB Alvester Alexander had 678 yards and six scores on the ground.
The real concern has to be the Cowboys' defense. This unit ranked No. 115 in America, allowing 231.4 yards per game. Sure, there was a game against the Air Force Falcons in there, a team that basically only runs the football, but there were also games against Weber State and Texas State as well in which the team shouldn't have allowed all that many yards on the ground.
The Owls and Cowboys haven't met since 1990, a game in which Wyoming won 38-23.
Bookmaker Sportsbook is featuring Temple favored by 6.5 in the New Mexico Bowl, while the 'total' has been set at 48.
