Early Super Bowl odds, and comments:
(Odds courtesy of Las Vegas Hilton)
Indianapolis 6/1
Overvalued – Too dependent on one player not getting hurt.
San Diego 8/1
Overvalued – Groundhog Day every playoff season. Time to move on without Tomlinson.
New England 10/1
Overvalued – Too many defensive issues. Belichick’s history after rough seasons is to bring in lots of new bodies.
New Orleans 10/1
About right – They own the NFC South. Brees now mentioned as Top-5 QB.
Pittsburgh 10/1
Undervalued – Solid team rebounding from an off year. Should win the AFC North.
Philadelphia 12/1
Undervalued – Assuming McNabb stays. But it’s time for Westbrook to exit while he’s still in one piece.
Minnesota 12/1
Overvalued – Even if Favre comes back. Harvin ready for a breakout season.
Green Bay 12/1
Undervalued – Defense won’t have to start from scratch, and a healthy Raji at NT is a huge plus.
Dallas 12/1
About right – On the rise. But is this team capable of a long playoff run without stumbling along the way?
Baltimore 15/1
Undervalued – Has to be a place at table for a team that runs the ball. Linebackers are getting a little old.
New York J-e-t-s 15/1
Overvalued – Take away the games they were given (Indy, Cincy) and they were a 9-8 team.
Atlanta 30/1
Undervalued – Defense needs tweaking. You wonder if this team is lacking a Bryan Cox-type.
New York Giants 30/1
Undervalued – Fresh start might bring back their mojo and a lacking sense of urgency.
Cincinnati 30/1
Overvalued – Much tougher schedule on the horizon. Has Carson Palmer maxed out as a middle-of-the-road QB?
San Francisco 30/1
Undervalued – Alex Smith is best QB in division. Time to ride Frank Gore while he still is an effective hammer.
Tennessee 30/1
Undervalued – Vince Young will have experience and full training camp under his belt. Chris Johnson is talking big money, and that’s not a good sign.
Arizona 40/1
Overvalued – Could get ugly for Leinart. Would they draft Tebow and corner the market on left-handed quarterbacks?
Houston 40/1
Undervalued – Team with decent talent goes 9-7 and they’re ready to throw a parade? Time to let the defense get creative.
Carolina 40/1
Overvalued – Peppers leaving and Delhomme staying. Should be vice versa.
Miami 40/1
Undervalued – They play hard every week. With Jets decent and Pats everpresent, hard to see Fins challenging for AFC East title.
Seattle 40/1
Overvalued – Now that new coach is in place, they need new players. Last few years they mailed in too many games on the road.
Chicago 40/1
About right – Looks like Cutler will never get it. Matt Forte took big step backward this past season.
Jacksonville 50/1
Undervalued – Division out of play until Manning retires. How they stay in wild card race until final few weeks was a head-scratcher.
Washington 50/1
Overvalued – They need a quarterback. And a new attitude. And decent coaching. And a new owner.
Denver 50/1
Undervalued – Gap between Broncs and Chargers not that great. Is there anyone McDaniels isn’t feuding with?
Cleveland, Buffalo and Kansas City (100/1 each)
No chance – But decent talent on all three
Oakland (250/1), Detroit (200/1), Tampa Bay (200/1) and St. Louis (300/1)
Of the four, Rams could make a move up in a weak division
Hornung on gambling and today’s NFL
In Las Vegas during the week leading up to the Super Bowl I had a chance to speak with former NFL great Paul Hornung, who along with Alex Karas of the Detroit Lions was suspended for a full season for gambling on NFL games.
“I made a mistake and paid for it” was all that the former Packer great would say about the suspension.
Unlike Pete Rose, Hornung (now 74 years old) quickly fessed up to gambling, and he was reinstated and allowed to continue an NFL career that ended in 1967. He dressed for Super Bowl I, but didn’t play due to a hamstring injury. He was later voted into the NFL Hall of Fame.
Among Hornung’s comments:
On Rose: “For God’s sake, put him in the Hall of Fame. Lots of guys in there did a lot worse than he did.”
On Tiger Woods: “I did more than my share of chasing, but I wasn’t married at the time.”
On the NFL game today: “The networks want wide-open games, so the NFL rules are geared toward passing and not running.”
LeBron ready to pack his bags?
One interesting bet offered at the Hilton: “Will LeBron James score a point for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2010-11 season?” Yes -128, No +108
