It was a relatively quiet week in the online gambling industry, with just a few internet betting related headlines.

One of the hot stories this week involved a study, conducted by the University of Las Vegas and University of Western Ontario in Canada. The study confirmed what most bettors already knew. What they found was, that online gambling is still readily accessible through the internet, even since the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006. The study suggests, "Canada and the United States should legalize and regulate online gambling to contain its potentially harmful effects because players tend to bet more frequently and aggressively than they do in casinos."

The USA Today published an editorial asking if it was time to legalize online gambling and it also included a poll asking viewers their thoughts on the subject with 97% of the people voting that it is in fact time to legalize online betting. At time of press there were 1,580 votes.

Earlier in the week, Rep. Jim McDermott introduced legislation that would legalize internet gambling. H.R. 6501 would amend the Social Security Act to establish a trust fund with proceeds from the taxation of Internet gambling to provide opportunities to individuals who are, or were, in foster care and individuals in declining sectors of the economy, according to Sarah Polson.

And finally in another expected move, the United States and Antigua delayed the deadline in the gambling dispute which has already seen the World Trade Organization side with tiny Antigua for what amounts to be about $21 million in sanctions. The new deadline has been set for August 1st, 2008.
