Buying Points

Most online sportsbooks will allow bettors to buy points on NFL, CFB, NBA & CBB games. There are many times when a sports bettor will lose a game by one half of a point so they might be more inclined to buy a point the next time around.

Buying points usually cost 10 cents for each 1/2 point you buy unless you are buying off the number 3 or 7 which are the most common winning margin in football. When you buy off 3 or 7 you will most likely pay up to 25 cents for each 1/2 point.

Many sportsbooks like Bet Jamaica will let you buy six 1/2 points or three whole points. Buying on or off the "3" in the NFL will cost 25 cents and 15 cents in college football. Buying on or off the “7” in the NFL costs 15 cents. Everything else will cost 10 cents. Standard juice is 10 cents or - 110 of course.

For example, the Pittsburgh Steelers are favored by 3.5 points over the New York Jets. Without buying points, bettors can bet the Steelers -3.5 -110 or the Jets +3.5 -110. If you liked the Steelers but only thought they would win by a field goal you could buy one point and bet the Steelers -2.5 -130 or on 1/2 a point you would lay Steelers -3 -120.

In a different scenario the Green Bay Packers are favored by 3 points over the Chicago Bears. Since the number is starting at -3 -110 you will have to lay 25 cents. So if you bet on the Packers and bought 1/2 a point your wager would look like Green Bay -2.5 -135.

Buying points may give you a little flexibility with an adjusted point spread and you are able to do it only on one game where if you bet a teaser, you get more points but have to win two or more games.
