Bobby Knight, the head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders has resigned effective immediately as the head coach. Pat Knight who is the son of the all-time winningest coach will take over for his father, a move that was expected later on down the road. In 2005, the Red Raiders made Pat Knight the official successor to his father.
Knight told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that the original plan was to step down after the season but after careful consideration, he decided it was best to step away now so the University can help the transition be a smoother one. The thought process is the Red Raiders will return most of the team next year and this would allow Pat Knight a chance to put his mark on the team while getting a full understanding of his team this year for the final 10 games in preparation for next season and the future.
Knight's final game was a 67-60 win over Oklahoma State which was win number 902 for the legendary coach. Knight is 67 years old and has been a head coach for 42 years which include stops at Army, Texas Tech and a long, distinguished career at Indiana where he delivered three national championships.
Along with this great coaching ability, controversy followed Bobby Knight because of his fiery temper and entertaining sound bites over the years. He was fired by Indiana in 2001 after repeated behavior that the University said was unacceptable. Most players along the way loved playing for the unpredictable coach and parents also appreciated the fact that Knight's students had a high graduation rate.
Bobby Knight will still be involved in the recruiting part of Texas Tech basketball and told the University he would still help anyway he can.
