Preview: Diamondbacks at Rockies
Gracenote
Sep 3, 2017

J.D. Martinez has provided the power-packed punch the Arizona Diamondbacks expected when they acquired the slugger from Detroit in mid-July. Martinez looks to continue his surge as white-hot Arizona aims to extend its season-high winning streak to 10 contests on Sunday in the finale of its three-game series against the host Colorado Rockies.

The 30-year-old belted his fourth homer in seven contests and 14th in 39 games since donning a Diamondbacks jersey in Saturday's 6-2 victory. While Arizona has scored 47 runs in its last six contests to build a 5 1/2-game lead over Colorado for the top wild card in the National League, the Rockies have dropped nine of 13 and sit 1 1/2 ahead of Milwaukee in the race for the second spot. All-Star DJ LeMahieu scored twice and ripped a triple on Saturday to extend his season-high hitting streak to 10 games, a stretch during which he has gone 15-for-40 with three homers. The 29-year-old LeMahieu is 15-for-47 this season against Arizona, although he is 0-for-5 lifetime versus Sunday starter Zack Godley.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (6-7, 3.29 ERA) vs. Rockies RH German Marquez (10-5, 4.18)

Godley snapped a three-start losing streak by recording his first win in nearly four weeks on Tuesday after working six innings in a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 27-year-old has served up two homers in three of his last five outings after being taken deep just six times in his previous 15 starts. Godley surrendered a homer in his last turn at Colorado on June 22 but yielded just three runs and four hits while striking out eight in seven innings of a 10-3 triumph.

Marquez will remain on regular rest when he takes the scheduled spot in the rotation of Antonio Senzatela on Sunday. The 22-year-old Venezuelan matched a career high with 10 strikeouts but settled for his second straight no-decision on Tuesday versus Detroit. Arizona is no stranger to Marquez, who owns an 0-1 record despite registering a 3.42 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings while limiting the Diamondbacks to a .227 batting average.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado CF Charlie Blackmon, who saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end on Saturday, is 19-for-59 versus Arizona this season.

2. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt has gone 0-for-8 in the series after hitting safely in eight of his previous nine games.

3. Rockies LF Ian Desmond is 4-for-18 since returning from a month-long absence due to a calf injury and just 6-for-41 this season versus the Arizona.

PREDICTION: Rockies 4, Diamondbacks 3
