bookmaker TAB's weekly review Jan 6

Cricket, football, racing and American sport was where the punters were aiming their big guns over the New Year period and results were mixed.

Its playoff time in the NFL and we took a winning bet of $20,000 at $2.50 that the Philadelphia Eagles would beat the Minnesota Vikings by 12 or less. Also in the NFL there was $14,290 at $2.05 that San Diego could give Denver an 8 and a half point start, and they did. A lot of Bowl matches being played in American football at this time of the year and several of them didn't really work out for our punters. These were losing bets : $19,600 at $1.77 on the Liberty Bowl producing 42 points or less, and two $10,000 wagers on the Holiday Bowl producing 76 points or more, the first at $2.00 and the second at $1.87.

A solid winning bet from the NBA - $11,700 at $1.85 on the LA Lakers and Utah producing 209 points or more while another punter put a winning wager of $12,500 at $1.14 on the Lakers beating the Jazz.

Cricket on both sides of the Tasman has attracted a lot of interest. South Africa won the second test against Australia in Melbourne to clinch that series but in live betting we took a bet on Australia of $11,782 at $1.37. In the same match a punter preicted (wrongly) that Niel McKenzie would be the next man out. The bet was $10,000 at $1.70. Meanwhile in this country the West Indies and New Zealand are halfway through their 1 - day series after finishing the 20/20 competition at 1 all. We took two winning bets on New Zealand winning the second 20/20 match - $10,000 at $1.67 and another $10,000 at $1.22. Contrasting bets on the second of the 1 - dayers, won by the West Indies after rain delays. There was $10,000 at $1.40 in live betting on the Windies and $10,000 at $1.14 on New Zealand also in live betting.

Other bets of note, all of the losing variety. $10,000 at $1.90 and another $10,000 at $1.80 on Stoke City to beat Hartlepool in the FA Cup, and two $10,000 wagers on Alagant satin winning the NZ Bloodstock 2000 at $5.00.

Interesting stuff. One thing i only just noticed the other day with the TAB is, that they never change the lines. What ever line they post, thats what it will close at.

Yeah in Aussie the lines don't move just the odds drop. The NZTAB used to do the same until recently. What they sometimes do now say a points start is +8.5 1.87 and the markets move to say around +10....they will close the 8.5 option and re-open at 10.5.
What they used to do is just make the +8.5 2.10 or so, they sometimes still do that.

I find the fair stinks for hockey or any other minor betting events. Terrible liquidity. Meaning can never get the stake amounts on I want.

Betfair isn't always good for betting Hockey, because if a line is posted at 6, then they'll add the 0.5 to the line making a line of 6.5. SO, if a game ends 4-2, then you lose, which sucks.

i don't know how you cap hockey, but i don't bet an over in a '6' game if i expect to see just 7 or 8 goals too thin for me.

so if i want the over and feel confident i take the 6.5 and get way better odds - if there is enough money on the market.

but dave is right, as the americans are banned there it's hard to get enough action, especially in NHL and nearly impossible in MLB, especially if you prefer RL and ARL plays as i do.
