TAB review April 21
There were four $50,000 sports bets last week and the punters tooks the honours 3-1.
The first was a $50,000 losing wager on the increasingly disappointing Waratahs to beat the Western Force at a price of $1.60. John Mitchell's Force won the match 15-14. The winning bets were: $50,000 at $1.67 on Pittsburgh and Houston producing 9 runs or less in Major League baseball, $50,000 at $1.45 on the New Zealand Warriors beating the Sydney Roosters, which they did with a Stacey Jones dropkick in extra time, and $50,000 at $1.65 on Manchester City beating West Bromwich Albion in the English Premier League. There was plenty of betting activity during the Super 14 last week with the $50,000 bet already mentioned. The Hurricanes returned to New Zealand last week after a successful trip to South Africa and Australia and were able to account for the Stormers in Wellington by 34 to 11. Bets on the Hurricanes included $40,000 at $1.25 in live betting and two others, also in live betting, $11,451 at $1.01 (very late in the match), and $10,000 at $1.40. The Blues remain a semi-final hope, particularly after their big win last Friday over the Highlanders. In live betting the biggest wager on the Blues was $33,500 at $1.40. Perhaps the biggest upset of the round saw the Lions from South Africa beat the Reds in Brisbane. Once again in live betting we took the following bets: $17,228 at $1.09 on the Lions, $10,000 at $1.35 on the Reds, and $10,000 at $1.13 on the Lions. Besides the $50,000 bet on the Warriors there were several other sizeable bets in the NRL. Let's stay firstly with the Warriors game because in live betting in the first half we took a couple of $10,000 bets on the Roosters at $1.22. The Manly Sea Eagles are finally back in winning form after struggling to get their campaign underway. Last weekend they beat Souths and in live betting we took $11,670 at $1.01 (very late in the game) and $10,000 at $1.50. Ricky Stuart's Cronulla Sharks are really struggling to get their season started and they lost last weekend to North Queensland. We fielded one bet of $10,000 at $2.35 on the Sharks. Other random sports bets to report, all winners: $12,500 at $1.27 on Arsenal to beat Villareal in the Champions League, $11,000 at $1.60 on the galloper Nonchalance to win the Ballarat Maiden, $10,702 at $1.07 on Djokovic to beat Montanes in the Monte Carlo tennis tournament and $10,000 at $1.30 on the Queensland Firebirds to beat the Pulse in the ANZ Netball Championship.
