TAB weekly review Oct. 29

In the opening market for last weekends Air NZ Cup final,Canterbury were the warm $1.60 favourites with Wellington priced at $2.20. Such was the weight of money on Wellington by the start of the match that they were both paying $1.87. There was some massive betting on Wellington but they couldn't get their supporters home, losing 7-6 in the rain. The biggest wager was $125,000 at $2.00 but we also took $50,000 at $1.87 and $20,000 at $2.10. A huge result for the rugby bookies with a high percentage of multis also travelling through Wellington. The only other significant rugby bet at the weekend was a winner : $12,000 at $1.16 on Wanganui to beat Mid Canterbury in the Meads Cup final, which they did.

At the time of writing this column we have a $100,000 bet at $1.47 on the 5th game of the World Series baseball between the Phillies and the Rays and the bet is on the Phillies to win the game. Currently its 2 all at the bottom of the 6th so our punter has plenty of time to stew over his/her bet. However there was a healthy payout on the $100,000 bet at $1.75 on game one of the World Series producing 7 runs or less.

In the world of football we took a wager of $50,000 at $1.75 on Wolves beating Swansea City in the Coca Cola Championship. Wolves got home 2-1.

The Rugby League World Cup is underway and in the first significant match the Kangaroos were much too good for the Kiwis and in the process landed a couple of useful bets. We took $23,267 at $1.24 , $16,869 also at $1.24 and $10,000 at $1.22.

In the world of racing the unbeaten Auckland Reactor returned to the track at Ashburton and got home again after breaking early in the run. We took a wager of $18,000 at $1.25 on the 4 year old who won't, according to connections, run in the NZ Cup on November 11th. However galloper Delarouze ($10,000 at $2.80 ) and greyhound Aussie Opawa ($10,000 at $1.80 ) - couldn't get their supporters through.
