TAB weekly review Sept 1

All of a sudden the Air New Zealand Cup became the playground of our bigger punters last week, maybe because they had had 4 weeks to work out trends and form.

There were two $100,000 wagers on short priced favourites, Wellington and Southland, and both bets were successful. Wellington were at $1.16 against previously unbeaten Bay of Plenty and Southland were at $1.09 against Counties. The two sides were also backed with lesser amounts : Wellington $14,300 at $1.14 and Southland $12,200 at $1.09. There was also $10,000 at $1.20. There were a couple of upsets in the round with Waikato, previously without a win, beating Auckland, and Hawkes Bay ending a long drought at Carisbrook with a victory over Otago. There were losing bets of $33,510 at $1.75 on Otago and $20,000 at $1.40 on Auckland. Meanwhile in Johannesburg there was a complete form reversal with the Springboks recovering from a loss in Durban the previous week to thrash the Wallabies. The best bet on the Boks was $15,000 at $1.75.

It's fair to say that baseball punters had a poor week as the following information will confirm. $52,182 at $1.75 on Boston and NY Yankees to score 9 runs or less ( loser ), $50,000 at $1.75 on Washington and the LA Dodgers to score 8 or less ( loser ), $50,000 at $1.70 head to head on the NY Mets to beat Florida ( loser ), $50,000 at $1.33 on the LA Angels to beat Oakland head to head ( winner ),$40,000 at $1.75 on the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia to score 8 runs or less ( loser ), $27,464 at $1.90 on Philadelphia to down LA Dodgers ( winner ) and $16,500 at $1.75 on Seatlle and Minnesota to score 9 runs or less ( loser ). So a much better week for the baseball bookies after we got taken to the cleaners the previous week.

A couple of successful bets in the NRL with St George and the Warriors both recording healthy wins. The Dragons were much too good for the Eels and landed a bet of $20,800 at $1.37 while the Warriors kept their playoff dreams alive by thrashing the Panthers and their best suporter had $15,000 on them at $1.30.

Manchester United had a mixed week with a win over Portsmouth in the Premier League but a loss to Zenit in the Super Cup final. Their win was well received by the punter who had $20,000 on them at $1.75 but the loss hurt the punter who backed them with $12,000 at $1.60.
