TAB weekly review Sept 29

Its not often, in fact extremely rare, to get a large bet on the A League but that is what happened last week and the bet was successful.

The punter wanted $100,000 at $2.10 on Adelaide to beat Newcastle and finished up with $50,000 at that price and the remaining $50,000 at $1.90. A nice return of $100,000. There was no such confidence in the Phoenix even though they did surprise everyone by downing Sydney 2-1 and recording their first win of the season. However there was a mis-guided $10,000 on Sydney at $1.80. In the Premier League Manchester United got their campaign back on track by downing Bolton and landing a bet of $24,000 at $1.18.

It's very close to play off time in baseball with the best 8 teams, 4 from each league, battling it out for a place in the World Series. A couple of large and successful wagers over the past week : $46,500 at $1.42 on Houston to beat Cincinnati and $31,000 at $1.33 on Philadelphia to down Washington.

The tennis punters were out in force last week and with one exception were on the money. That exception was $20,000 at $1.17 on Safin to beat Petzschner. The winning bets were : $20,000 at $1.22 on Ferroro to beat Kudryavste, $20,000 at $1.20 on Djokovic to beat Soderling, $11,430 at $1.07 on Gonzalez to beat Soeda, and $10,000 at $1.30 on Kanepi beating Wickmayer.

The rugby league punters got it absolutely right with good backing for both Melbourne and Manly in the NRl semi finals. The Storm were much too good for Cronulla and landed bets of $20,000 at $1.55 and $10,000, also at $1.55. Manly were equally convincing against the Warriors and some of the better bets on them included : $20,000 at $1.45, $11,400 at $1.45 and three wagers of $10,000 at $1.45.

All the favourites won in the latest round of the Air New Zealand Cup although Taranaki were held to a draw by Counties which meant the $12,450 at $1.16 was apid out at half dividends. Other winning bets were : $16,030 at $1.40 on Waikato to beat Otago, $13,050 at $1.02 on Northland to down Manawatu, and $11,084 on Wellington to beat Tasman.

A couple of other random bets : Shane Cameron to beat the American Smith in their heavyweight boxing contest, $10,000 at $1.40 on Cameron ( winner ) and $11,000 at $1.40 on Geelong to beat Hawthorn in the AFL Grand Final ( loser ).
