Jason Heyward

This was a update on Jason. I've had/have shin splints and they hurt like a f---er. I used to jog but had to stop because they hurt so much. I don't think there is anything to heal them other than TIME. Just wondering how this effect him. I guess as long as he hits HR's he will not have to run that hard. lol

Heyward has been scratched from the Atlanta Braves' lineup against the Washington Nationals because of shin splints.

Advice: Heyward was slated to play right field in Sunday's exhibition game, but manager Bobby Cox held him out as a precaution, and the Braves said the rookie is day to day. Cox said Friday the 20-year-old would open the regular season as Atlanta's regular right fielder.

Shin splints are freaking painful. This guy does more than hit homers so he needs his legs. I have him in two leagues so hopefully it's not a nagging injury

I used to get them all the time. Till I had someone teach me how to run properly. Sounds dumb but I have not had them in years and I run everyday.

He needs to get off his toes. If not they wont go away.

I was told by DR to run on track/dirt instead of pavement or concrete. It helped alot, but what else can I try Ron? Are you saying by not pushing off from my toes will help also?

Poor running mechanics like excessive forward lean, excessive weight on the ball of the foot, running with toes pointed outward, landing too far back on the heels causing the foot to flap down, and overpronation.
Try to run as quiet as possible, with the feet landing properly very little noise should be heard. I run on a treadmill and a track. Its easier to tell how quiet your running when your on a treadmill.

It could also be your shoes. Need to make sure they have good arch support.

For the pain. I used to fill up dixie cups and freeze them.

while youre sitting at your computer, on cappersmall - have your feet flatfooted on the ground, and lift your toes, over and over again - you'll feel the burn on the muscle that runs down the front of your shin.

Alot of people shin splints are caused by that muscle being underdeveloped, and the larger calf muscle causing it pain when it tightens, pulling against that smaller muscle.

That's something you can do to help with it - and its something that can be done while posting at cappersmall
