1st storm of the atlantic season
Within the next 24hrs we could see Ana.The system should move mostly WNW & the long range forecast calls for the system to pass N.E of the Antilles and not strengthen very much due to wind shear. Another strong wave is emerging off of the coast of Africa & this could be the one to watch as both the GFS & European models are showing a hurricane in the greater Antilles late next week. .
Going back to 1900, 61.11% of Atlantic Hurricane seasons with 1st named storm starting after August 9th saw a major hurricane hit land. The majority of landfalls in those seasons were in South Florida with 5 majors*.This in no way means South Florida will be hit by a major this year but a reminder that a slower late starting season does not mean you are in the clear.
*ANDREW IN 92 IS THE ONE I REMEMBER
