401 k question

Is there a rule of thumb that you should follow in deciding what a comfortable amount is that you should be putting in? I know it's gonna be based somewhat on what you can afford and maybe how old you are and if maybe you have other investments as well......My company matches 2%...I have my form filled out for 10%.......Does that sound right? Any thoughts?

Kat, I had read somewhere that the baseline is $5,000 every year from age 25 to 65, and you'll retire with no worries. Adjust from there based on what you can afford, but obviously it becomes more expensive later to make up for slacking early. Those first couple years of $5,000 will do most of the work for you over the next 40 years.
