80 yr Old sisters fighting over lottery

EW BRITAIN, Conn. - An 84-year-old Connecticut woman battling with her 87-year-old sister for a share of a $500,00 lottery jackpot testified Tuesday that the two signed a contract to split gambling winnings, but that her sister told her she tore the agreement up and wouldn't share the money.

Rose Bakaysa, of Plainville, and her brother, Joseph Troy Sr., bought the winning Powerball ticket in 2005, but the two didn't share any of the jackpot with their sister Theresa Sokaitis, of Middletown.

Sokaitis sued her sister, saying the two had a written contract to divide all gambling winnings. Bakaysa believes the deal ended when the sisters had a falling out in 2004.

Sokaitis has said she and her sister used to gamble together frequently, play the same lottery numbers and play the slots and cards at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Sokaitis said they signed the agreement on sharing winnings in 1995 after she won more than $160,000 at Foxwoods and split it with Bakaysa.

Sokaitis testified she learned of her sister's good fortune when her daughter received a $10,000 gift from her aunt.

"I told her I felt I deserved a share of the money and she told me I wasn't going to get a dime," Sokaitis testified Tuesday. "I said, 'I have a contract.' She said, 'I tore mine up.' I said, 'I didn't.'"

Sokaitis acknowledged that her sister had been generous with her money over the years, helping her pay for her children's private education and getting her car back when it was repossessed.

A judge had dismissed Sokaitis' lawsuit under a Connecticut law that makes gambling contracts illegal. But the Supreme Court, in a ruling that took effect in August, said the sisters' agreement wasn't covered by that law because it involves legal activities. It said the case could go to trial.

Bakaysa was scheduled to testify Tuesday afternoon.

Geez......gamblers def has some issues...Really sad when it is with your family members.......and at that age.

I draw the line with your character....Looks, I can get over that, but fighting with you sister is where I bail on the opportunity to bang you.
