The codenames for Debian are sarge (stable -- latest official release), etch (testing), sid (unstable -- get this for most upgraded yet unsupported applications), and woody (experimental).

I use Debian Sarge 3.1 which is the latest official release. Most of the packages are official yet I do have some upgraded packages through unstable and backport repositories (package databases) which makes my system a little messy, but allows me to use some of the most up to date software.

And no I dont' live iin my parent's basement.

Also Ubuntu linux and KUbuntu linux are based on Debian. Ubuntu uses Gnome as its GUI and Kubuntu uses KDE (which is what I use).

For all things KDE go to http://www.kde.org

yeah go to KDE-look.org for KDE and Gnome-look.org for Gnome and you can turn the look of your Desktop into anything. Look at the link in my sig, that is what my KDE Desktop looks like.
