Another Disaster in San Diego

House collapses in S. Calif landslide

LA JOLLA, Calif (Reuters) - One home collapsed and streets buckled in a landslide in the hilly southern California town of La Jolla on Wednesday, officials said

Police evacuated residents and power was shut off to the area after the Wednesday morning slide. No injuries were reported and officials said other homes were not immediately threatened but warned the situation could change.

Fire officials said about 24 homes in the scenic beach town north of San Diego could be at risk if the slippage continues. But San Diego city attorney Michael Aguirre told reporters no-one was in immediate danger.

""We do not believe there is an immediate threat to residents. There does not appear to be any additional cracking at this point," Aguirre said. "This is a dynamic situation so we are not able to say for certain it won't become more of a problem."

One home in the mountainside area of million dollar plus properties slipped off its foundations and its roof caved in. A 50 to 60 yard (meter) sinkhole scarred the road where the collapse occurred.

One homeowner said the road was blocked by about 25 feet
of dirt.

As the land shifted, resident Ross Clark wrote on a newsblog on the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper Web site that he was "looking at the mountain going into my pool and the neighbor's house."

"I heard the fence starting to crack. I heard a tree coming down. We grabbed the dogs and ran," he said, adding that he and his wife returned a short time later.

The area has a history of land slippages going back to the 1960s. The most recent street cracks and waterline breaks were noted in July and August, and engineers had warned residents this week that the hillside was again unstable and was threatening as many as eight houses.

Weather was not thought to be a factor in the landslip. Southern California is experiencing a drought with record low rainfall over the past year.

i dont care about any of that stuff...i just like living in europe...can't really do that without a job and do get a decent paying job you have to be either legally able to work there (working papers which most companies won't sponsor and being an american without any eu connections it is pretty tough to get jobs there) or work for an international company...the latter i basically can't do because i dont have any business experience...i...and i wont go there to teach english because it pays crap there, not like the ridiculously over payment i receive here.. prefer the feel the cities give you there...the old rustic feel and very liberal outlook on things as well...the politics itself i can do without...the eu is basically crap, i agree...look at what it has done to eastern europe.,..it was suppose to lift the entire populations of the countries, whereas now it is only benefitting the rich who didnt need any help...the prices have gone up and the wagers have stayed pretty much at crap levels

you are right...i just read the full article and that shouldnt really be considered a disaster...only one house collapsed and nothing else was really impacted by the fall of the house...a pile up on a highway is moreso a disaster than that house collapsing and that pile up wouldnt be considered a disaster either
