Anyone had meniscus problems before?

Just got back from the doctors and mine is apparently being kept together by a thread

Have been told I can't exercise for a couple weeks, at least (at least running wise) This is not going to be fun for me and the people around me

I don't recommend it. Pain has been pretty bad the last couple weeks

No, it's a wear and tear thing. Doctor said it's like the brake pads on a car that wear down after repetitive use

Ive had numerous knee surgeries, get a scope and have them clean up scar tissue. Should do the trick, unless arthritis has progressed. I just got a synvisc injection for arthritis in my knee a month ago, total difference. Knee went from constant grinding to smooth movement.

They said there was no arthritis, They did say that

They are hoping to avoid the scope, if possible. Hoping rest will help, but it doesn't sound good.

Thanks for the info

Gerk, have had a "bucket handle" tear in my meniscus in my left knee for a good while now. My ortho used to be the trainer/ortho for Wake Forest and is currently the trainer for East Tenn State University athletics, and he told me that in about 30% of meniscus cases, it actually heals (if there is blood flow to the tear area). If there is no blood flow to the area of your tear, then scope is the only fix.

He told me that if it doesn't hurt and doesn't swell and I could live with the popping and cracking, we could hold off on the surgery until it becomes symptomatic. That was 10 years ago. I still play hoops and haven't had the first problem.

As with yourself, I had no injury to the knee, just normal degeneration due to age. Too bad we great ex-athletes have to get old.........

Hey Gerk there are many good point being made here want to make just one more. If you are sitting down for a prolonged period of time does you knee feel likes it "locks" when you stand up? If this is the case there is a good possiblity that you may have a piece of your meniscus almost sticking up inside of your joint. Many times doctors hope to avoid scopes on the meniscus but in fact a knee scope is so effective that it may be worth looking into. I see many patients who have knee scopes (I'm a PT) and they all do very well very quickly. I wish you the best of luck with the knee.

It's a shame Gerk's 36 inch vertical jump has been now reduced to 10

The doctor doesn't think the scope is necessary right now, unless the pain becomes worse

I am supposed to go back in a few weeks and if it still the same, she said we would look at it then

Like Shark said in his post, She said some heal themselves and she doesn't want to do an unnecessary procedure

No locking or swelling, as of now

Dude, get that thing scoped. That stuff isn't going to grow back together. I had my right knee scoped for a meniscus tear a long time ago. (BTW, that's my "good" knee, not the one famously documented here.)

Scopes are easy. Swelling and pain will be gone in a couple of weeks, and all the pain you have from it now will be gone.

When I did it, I thought it was the greatest thing ever....went from pain (especially when kneeling or pivoting on it) to no pain just like that.

If you do it now, it lessens the chance of further tearing and you'll ultimately be left with more meniscus. My buddy Ben played for the Patriots for 4 years, and had to get 60%+ of his removed in both knees. Sucks for him now, still walking around at 340 on just 30-40%. His knees hurt all the time.
