Anyone had to put a parent in assisted living?

My dad has had a couple of extended hospital stays lately and at least for now, going to need to put him in an assisted living complex. Just wondering if anyone had any advice of what to look for or if anyone had some tips from a learned experience. Hopefully not permanent, but want to make a good decision and have no family experience with this. I know we have a lot of people with different experiences at the mall. Just looking for some advice or good questions to ask when searching for a place for him. Appreciate any help.

Check the state for records on complaints filed.... Available visiting hours...how long can you check him out to say stay with you or travel... Insurance coverage.... Quality of staff on site

Have had my mom in one for 6 years, here is what I know.

First thing you should ask is how many aides per resident do they have.

An ideal facility will be about 1-5 , but it will be $$$$$$$. You don't want 1-20

For sure ask the following questions if he needs 24 hour care.

How many nurses on the clock at one time?

How many meals per day?

How many times will he be showered in a week?

Do they charge extra for giving insulin shots to diabetics?

Do they have someone who will clean his room & do his laundry?

What kind of activities do they have? You don't want him watching tv all day.

Watch out for extra fees, they will hit you for everything.

Is he a military vet? If so you can get Uncle Sam to foot the bill at VA Assisted living facility, If not it will be spending. Mom started at $7,000 a month, now it is $9,200.
But that is for 24 hour care.

Good luck & check several places, don't rush to a decision.

Im a Physical Therapist so I deal alot with patients who need to go into assisted living...Assisted living is very expensive as mentioned if you find the assisted living to be too expensive there are other options, my grandparents are 91 each and need help with bathing meds meals etc, they have hired a personal aide to come to the house x numbers of hours a day, this option is far less expensive the personal care, just throwing ideas out there

What do you mean "foot the bill"?! Uncle Sam is taxpayers, taxpayers is Uncle Sam! We can assist you, show taxpayers more gratitude!

We have long term insurance for him so cost is not an issue. Thanks for the info. Very helpful. Never had to do this before so just looking for a starting point.

If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.” ---Jim Valvano
