Actually Sundance the Federal Gov filed suit against the law and is asking for an injunction until the case is decided so July 29 is pretty unlikely.

Can someone give me a succinct answer as to why this is a good law and why it is a bad law?

Seems like arresting and getting rid of illegal aliens, people who came into the U.S. through improper channels, is a good thing, no?

I hear calls of "racial profiling", but as long as you have your proper documentation and papers (like you would in some other countries around the world) as a legal immigrant then there should be no problems...right?

I confess that I don't know that much about the issues at stake here. I just don't get what all the uproar is about...can someone please enlighten this Canadian?

That is not really this issue. I think most agree that the US has an issue they need to address with immigration (mostly Mexican). The issue is the enforcement.

The problem most have with the law is that it gives the power to the average beat cop to inquire about immigration status to anyone they have "reason to believe" is illegal. Most likely, those people will all be people of color, and it certainly wont be any whites (how would a cop have reason to believe someone is hear illegally from say, Canada, for example).

The problem with this law is not that it may get rid of illegals, it's that it will infringe on many legal Americans Constitutional rights.

cops cannot just walk up to someone and ask for papers. They can only ask about citizen status after that individual has commited a crime. I urge all to read the bill and inform yourself. It's an easy read; only 23 pages.
