Basketball Terror Alert?? HUH?

FBI distributes bulletin about online threat
March 10, 2006

WASHINGTON - The FBI said Friday there is no specific, credible threat of a terror attack aimed at college basketball arenas or other sports stadiums, but acknowledged alerting law enforcement to a recent Internet posting discussing such attacks.

The FBI and Homeland Security Department distributed an intelligence bulletin Friday to state and local law enforcement nationwide describing the online threat against sporting venues, said Special Agent Richard Kolko, an FBI spokesman in Washington.

"We have absolutely no credible intelligence or threats pertaining to this issue," Kolko said.

With conference tournaments taking place this weekend, and the NCAA tournament scheduled to begin next week, the bulletin was sent "out of an abundance of caution," Kolko said.

"We have been in touch with Homeland Security and the FBI about this issue," said NCAA spokesman Erik Christiansen.

"We do not believe there is an imminent threat," he said. "We are in constant communication with the local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security and the FBI. This is not new; we are in regular contact with all these law enforcement agencies at every level."

The online message described a potential attack in some detail, calling it an efficient way to kill thousands of people using suicide bombers armed with explosives hidden beneath their winter clothing, said a federal law enforcement official who read the bulletin.

But the government document also said U.S. intelligence sources could not corroborate the information or say whether the site was linked to al-Qaida.

In the past, intelligence assessments have been sent in advance of major holidays and sporting events because they pose an inviting target for terrorists.

Its gotta be a hoax.
If they wanted to kill thousands of people, they can do that at any NBA game. No need to wait for March Madness.....unless they are specifically targeting students.

San Diego NCAA arena evacuated on bomb scare
Thu Mar 16, 2006 1:34 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police evacuated a San Diego college arena on Thursday, hours before a first-round NCAA championship basketball game, after a bomb-sniffing dog signaled a potential problem at a hot dog stand.

Cox Arena at San Diego State University was cleared while police tried to determine if there was an explosive device in the hot dog stand, college spokesman Jack Beresford said.

He said it was not immediately clear how many people were inside the building at the time but that the teams had not yet arrived.

"A bomb-sniffing dog noticed something in a hot dog cart," Beresford said. "They got a hit on something that was in the cart itself.

That dog sniffed out an "All Beef Oscar Meyer Wienie" in the hot dog stand. There is nothing to be overly concerned about. Just give that dog a wienie and let it carry on. This dog ain't stupid......it knows a real Oscar wienie from a snausages.

Here is another report on the same news report...

San Diego arena evacuated before NCAA game

LOS ANGELES --- Police evacuated Cox Arena at San Diego State on Thursday, hours before a first-round NCAA championship basketball game, after a bomb-sniffing dog signaled a potential problem at a hot dog stand.

Cox Arena at San Diego State University was cleared while police tried to determine if there was an explosive device in the hot dog stand, assistant vice president for marketing and communications Jack Beresford told Reuters.

He said it was not immediately clear how many people were inside the building at the time but that the teams had not yet arrived.

ESPN's Jay Bilas reported that Marquette was on its bus at the hotel and had not been cleared to come to the arena. Tip-off is scheduled to tip off at 2:40 p.m. ET

"A bomb-sniffing dog noticed something in a hot dog cart," Beresford said. "They got a hit on something that was in the cart itself."

Later games include UCLA vs. Belmont at 4:55 p.m. ET, Illinois vs. Air Force at 7:25 p.m. ET and Washington vs. Utah State at 9:45 p.m. ET.
