BetCRIS to buy Sealand?

BetCRIS sports book announced its interest in purchasing Sealand, a self-declared independent territory six miles off the coast of England.

"[Buying Sealand] we could write our own laws, and it would be pretty hard to extradite us." Eric Williamson, head of international operations for BetCRIS, told the New York Post.

Sealand was founded as a sovereign Principality in 1967 in international waters, six miles off the eastern shores of Britain.

In late June of 2006, the island suffered a devastating fire which destroyed much of the country's administrative centre and the main power generation facility which serves its population and industries.

Sealand was founded on the principle that any group of people dissatisfied with the oppressive laws and restrictions of existing nation states may declare independence in any place not claimed to be under the jurisdiction of another sovereign entity.

The location chosen was Roughs Tower, an island fortress created in World War II by Britain and subsequently abandoned to the jurisdiction of the High Seas.

The independence of Sealand was upheld in a 1968 British court decision where the judge held that Roughs Tower stood in international waters and did not fall under the legal jurisdiction of the United Kingdom.

Williamson said BetCRIS might be willing to pay a price "in the tens of millions" for the ability to set up a Sealand HQ.

BetCRIS is one of the pioneers of the gambling industry. In business since 1985 BetCRIS.com has built an impeccable reputation based on its flawless payout performance throughout its 21 years of service.

In recent times BetCRIS came to the rescue of BETonSPORTS international customers by offering a generous relief plan to the victims of the Antigua licensed failed operation.

Last week Thursday Pinnacle Sports announced its withdrawal from the U.S. market. Thousands of former Pinnacle Sports customers have been migrating to BetCRIS since.

This would be incredibly awesome if they manage to buy it. I love BetCRIS, and anything that gives them the ability to stick around would rock.

I'm curious if the owners/staff would live on Sealand or exactly how that would go about, because I know I can safely say that if I had to give up almost all of my everyday luxuries to live in on a small "island" in the middle of the ocean just to keep running my business; I'd shut down.

bizarre story, i read about sealand a few days ago and it was so interesting, i did some follow up research. it seems that laws are contradictory over whether or not it really does have soverenty. More legal gray area it seems.
For an interesting read, everyone should do a google search on sealand and read the winkepedia page on the "nation."
