Bookie red-faced after early Woods PGA payout

LONDON (AFP) - An Irish Bookmaker was left red-faced Monday - and some two million dollars out of pocket - after paying out early to gamblers backing Tiger Woods to win the US PGA golf championship.

Paddy Power was so sure that Woods would triumph that it paid out 1.25 million pounds (1.4 million euros, 2 million dollars) before he teed off for his third round Saturday, when he was four shots ahead.

But the golfing legend - who has won 14 major titles and is ranked world number one - was beaten by South Korea's Yang Yong-Eun, ranked 110th in the world, in one of the biggest upsets in golfing history.

Yang became the first Asian to win a major.

Paddy Power said its mistake was the worst of its kind, and that nearly 5,000 customers had received a lucky payout.

"It takes a special kind of dimwit to turn what should have been our best ever golf result into our worst," said a spokesman.

"Paddy Power punters are obviously the big winners here and have made like bandits getting paid out on Tiger as a winner."

It is more probably a publicity stunt which will pay off huge. Paying out $2.1 million with the result of having your company's name on the front page of every major newspaper in the world is a bargain.
