Not a fan of his fiction (unable to make it beyond a chapter or two every time I tried) but Stephen King's "On Writing" was a valuable read, if you're interested in these things.

I am a fan of Elmore Leonard (he was mentioned in the link you posted.)
If an aspiring author reads just one piece on writing, it should be his "10 Rules." Every one of the ten is a nugget of gold.
