I'm going to start posting stuff that I read about in Discover magazine. As much as I love sports, I love science, as well


According to Discover magazine, scientists in Atlanta have created 'minibrains' in petri dishes that can control robots and computer-simulated animals. These living brains are called Neurally Controlled Animats. The Animat's "brain" consists of 'rat neurons growing on a plate of electrodes.' These neurons are linked to an artificial body.

These brain cells input various information from their outside environment, process it and stimulate behaviour in the robot. Some Animats can 'chase a target around a room, scribble simple drawings and move around obstacles.'

Scientists say that it use to be hard to train Animats but they figured out that without constant sensory input, their brains would misfire. Now, scientists have figured out how to control the misfiring by applying 'soothing background stimulation.'

As one scientist said, "They can process information from their environment and respond to it. It's not human consciousness, but it's something.'
