BS study

Representative Spencer Bachus, the ranking Republican member of the Financial Services Committee, strongly defended the UIGEA, which he co-sponsored.

During the congressional hearing, Bachus presented a firm moral argument against the gambling industry and expressed concern that the IGREA legislation currently being proposed by Frank could undermine the UIGEA.

“Make no mistake, illegal Internet gambling ruins lives and tears families apart. Study after study has shown that Internet gambling is a scourge on our society that leads to addiction, bankruptcy, family conflict, and crime. Illegal Internet gambling intensifies the devastation wrought by gambling by bringing the casino into the home,” he said. He cited one study which stated that 74 per cent of those who used the Internet to gamble had become addicted to gambling and many of those people had turned to crime to support their addictions.
