Business and Family Members

Do you think it`s a good idea to have family members, Dad, Mom, Brother or Sister in business with you if you wanted to open one up or bring one or two in with you if you have a business already? Me personally think it`s a bad idea.

Victor I would not start a business with my family for anything in the world. Love them to death but I don't want to deal with them day in and day out. I have a step mother and she has already phucked up the family business. The step mother from hell.

I worked for a company that was handed down to three brothers. One worked and two were along for the easy ride. The two decided to boot the good one out, immediately tripled their take home and then finally sold out to our competitor.
The next company I worked for was run by a father and son,had another son try to work for them - he got botted about 5 times , then dad booted the other son out, took him back, and has now sold out- once again to our competitors and I now work for

I may be in the minority, but my dad started a trucking company in '91. By '95, my dad, mom, 2 brothers and me were in the same office day in and day out until '01. There were very heated arguements amongst all of us at times, but we always kept within the business. We also had a family dinner every Tuesday night and the rule was the work would not be discussed no matter what. It worked well for us.

Unfortunately, my dad passed away in '01 and we eventually sold the business in '04 or I would probably still be working with the entire family.

this one can go both ways imo. i have a business and yes one of my employees is my one of my sons & my brother inlaw. i have had cousins who worked for me as well in the past.

in the past i can remember some really heated arguments w/ my son on work matters and yah i fired him a few times and he has quit a couple times too lol. one of the lessons i have learned w/ that was to give them their own space to do the job but hold em accountable for their actions.

when i did diversify the business, it was my son who relocated and ran the operation and he has done a really good job of it so i have no complaints. i would've never offered that opportunity to my BIL though because he is a whiner when i have tightened the screws on him before and caught some jabs from him whining about why he was'nt given that opportunity.

in short it is a delicate situation when working w/ family because after all in the end when it comes down to it who can you really count on but family...
