Cadillac Escalade most stolen vehicle in U.S.

"The Cadillac Escalade, a chrome and glitz behemoth is the hands-down winner when it comes to rate of theft as well as cost of insurance payouts.

The blinged-out SUV, a favorite of rappers and A-listers like Tiger Woods, is also the vehicle most targeted by thieves, according to an insurance industry group. According to the Arlington, Va.-based Highway Loss Data Institute, the Escalade is seven times more likely to be stolen than an average passenger car. The amount insurance companies have paid out in Escalade thefts is 10 higher than average.

Remarkably, the high-tech Escalade comes equipped with anti-theft ignition immobilizers that are supposed to prevent them from being started without the proper key.

But that hasn't deterred thieves, according to HLDI Senior Vice President Kim Hazelbaker.

"Even though Escalades have the latest immobilizer technology, thieves still can put them on flatbeds and haul them away."

Following the Escalade on the list is the Ford F-250 crew pickup, Infinity G37 Luxury car and Dodge Charger with a Hemi engine.

"Sedate family cars and fuel sippers aren't, on the hot list," Hazelbaker noted, "Thieves are after chrome, horsepower and Hemis."

I have a couple friends with Escalades. Was worried for them until I saw that just 1 of 100 Escalades is stolen. If that's the worst, we should all sleep well at night.
