Calvin Ayre: "These charges have no bearing on Bodog"

Calvin Ayre on CNBC: Addressed Concerns over Online Gaming Executive David Carruthers of BetonSports.com Arrest. Bodog.com's Founder & CEO separated fact from fiction tonight on CNBC

Appearing on CNBC's "On the Money" tonight at 7pm EST (4pm PST) to
Mr. Ayre responded to the numerous questions currently circulating in the media regarding the online gaming industry since an online gaming executive was detained and charged in the United States.

"These charges have absolutely no bearing on Bodog.com and how it conducts its business." said Mr. Ayre in a statement released yesterday on the matter.

"Bodog.com has and always will run its entertainment enterprise with the highest ethical standards and within the laws in each of the jurisdictions where it conducts its business. Bodog.com will continue to carry on its business as usual. We are leading the way in digital entertainment and will continue to do so."

Whose next? BetonSports indictments have operators nervous

His much ballyhooed conference is slated for this coming Sunday in Las Vegas and today industry analysts wonder if Bodog.com CEO will actually show up in light of everything that has transpired over these last few days.

A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Missouri has returned a 22-count indictment charging 11 individuals and four corporations on various charges of racketeering, conspiracy and fraud, the Department of Justice announced today. The indictment was returned on June 1, 2006, and unsealed today.

BetonSports PLC, a publicly-traded holding company that owns a number of Internet sportsbooks and casinos, was among the companies charged in the indictment. The founder of BetonSports.com, Gary Stephen Kaplan, 47, was charged with 20 felony violations of federal laws including: the Wire Act, Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Conspiracy, interstate transportation of gambling paraphernalia, interference with the administration of Internal Revenue laws and tax evasion.

Are online gambling operators who advertise on TheOnLineWire.com cursed? It's been pointed out that advertisers are dropping like flies and BetonSports serves as the latest example. "He's worse than John Madden" said one online gambler, referring to the video game and its purported "Madden Curse". Others just say it is coincidence.

Also charged and being held without bail in a Dallas holding unit is BetonSports.com CEO David Carruthers, a British citizen. Thus far the UK government has shown little interest in helping free him.

Ayre is one of a number of online gambling company owners who have traveled regularly throughout the United States without issue. Ayre in fact had been in New York over the weekend and has since returned back to Costa Rica where his company takes bets from US citizens.

Calvin Ayre, interviewed Tuesday night on CNBC, insists the show must go on and that he has every intention of showing up at his own conference.

Ayre reiterated he had every intention of showing up for his conference.

Shares in online betting companies see-sawed on Thursday as BetonSports PLC, the internet and telephone gambling group facing charges in the US, denied a report that it had cut a crisis-averting deal with prosecutors.

In a statement issued at lunchtime, BetonSports said no such deal had been struck, and confirmed that it had suspended its US operations -- responsible for about 80 pct its revenues -- to comply with a restraining order issued by a federal court.

'Neither the company nor lawyers acting on its behalf have reached any such agreement nor are they in negotiations with any other party to these proceedings,' BETonSPORTS said.

Earlier, theonlinewire.com, which is run by a former porn purveyor and CEO of BetRoyal.com, reported that BetonSports had come to an agreement with prosecutors which could allow it to resume operations by the end of the week.

TheOnlineWire CEO Roberto Castigliano suggested he had digital tape recordings of someone alerting him to this supposed deal.

"If you'd like I can send you a digital recording of myself saying I have a 20-inch penis," joked one of his readers on TheOnlineWire posting forum.

The report, which reinforced the view that the indictment against BETonSPORTS is company-specific rather than the opening shot in a crackdown on the whole sector, triggered a surge in other online gaming shares.

Partygaming PLC, a FTSE-100 constituent, climbed as much as 10.8 pct in early trade, while 888 Holdings PLC rose 11.2 pct, and Sportingbet PLC jumped 18 pct. BETonSPORTS shares were suspended on Tuesday.

By 3.05 pm, Partygaming had settled back to 90-1/2 pence, still up 6.2 pct, with 888 up 1.5 pct at 171 and Sportingbet 0.1 pct higher at 182-1/4.
