Can a team with a losing conference record make the tourney?
I got in an argument with a guy yesterday.
Can an NCAA College Basketball team be selected for the NCAA Tournament even if they have a losing conference record? I know they can get in the tourney if they win their conference tourney, but can they get in with a losing record in their conference? Can anyone tell me, if so, what are some of the teams. Thanks in advance guys. |

yes, if you win your conferenence and its a conference recognized by the tourny youre in, would be hard to have a losing record and win conference though i would assume
just like the seahawks |

At a quick glance Lunardi has Michigan in, and they are 8-9 right now.
I don't think there is a rule against it... maybe I am wrong. Would have to be a team with some good key wins, and big out of conference wins (obviously). Finishing the season strong... injuries at one point in season being considered.

Yes, if they are from a conference that has a conference tournament and they win they are in. Or they can get an at-large bid, but they would have to be from a tough conference and have beaten some good teams along the way.

yeah there are no rules in regards to conference record with making tourney as at large bid. usually doesn't happen given there are enough bubble teams with winning conference records to beat them out. with the move to 68 teams and the mediocrity in NCAA this year might see it happen.

Sure you can get in with a losing record in your conference. I just don't think they will let you in with an at large if they have an overall losing record. Nothing factual of course.

The ACC, Big Ten and Big East have both had teams in recent years to receive at-large bids that have finished sub .500 (7-9) in conference after making a deep run, though not winning, their conference tourney........

Well Villanova is 9-8 and may still be ranked in the top 25 and has a game looming with number 4 Pitt, if they lose that and they one and out vs say ;Cuse can they get in with a 9-10 conference record?
They will be 21-11 at that point with 8 of the 11 loses to top 25 teams ... Last edited by gryfyn1; 03-01-2011 at 06:38 AM. |

The selection commitee has always said they do not look at conference record when selecting teams for the tourney, just the overall body of work. I don't necessarily believe them, but that is what they say.
