Exclamation Canada Provincial Politician Seeks Internet Gambling Ad Ban

The Canadian publication Canoe reported this week that a politician in the Ontario legislature, Liberal MPP Jeff Leal has introduced a Bill that seeks to ban online gambling advertisements in the province.

Warning flags against Internet gambling by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health were mentioned in the debate, although less emphasis was placed on the fact that traditional gambling venues in the province make a substantial contribution to the provincial government coffers.

Motives behind the Bill may not be entirely altruistic. Competition from online gambling, such as online poker and online casinos, is cutting into the market share of Ontario's more traditional (and permitted) gambling outlets, Public Infrastructure Minister David Caplan said. "It is a real factor in the Ontario gaming scene," he said.

A 2000 poll, cited in the Addiction and Mental Health study, found 5.3 percent of Ontario adults had participated in online gambling.

It won't ever happen... and if it did it would not make a difference... not one bit... I have yet to see an advertisement in Ontario for online gambling. Poker yes, but not anything promoting any other sort of fun for profit. The companies have to get CRTC approval prior to optaining the rights to advertise; and if the commercials stop then what happens when networks in Canada show the WPT and within the broadcast are snippets to join a site... publications like Winners Edge to name one is distributed through the Toronto Sun and is a seperate publication with limited circulation and clearly indicates gamblers anon and what have yous... Stupid Liberal...

I bet the provincial lotteries are shaking their head to this guy...
Cracker...

I agree. The Pro-Lines and other Provincial Lotteries , inlcuding the Casinos bring in huge amounts of cash for Ontario. Just some a-hole trying to get his name in the press for a few days.
