Arrow CappersMall Exclusive Interview with BetCris.com

CappersMall Exclusive Interview with BetCris.com

The online gambling industry has seen it's ups and downs over the years but the last few months things have been like a rollercoaster. On behalf of BetCris executives Scott Martin, marketing manager of BetCris.com talked with Jack from CappersMall.com for an exclusive interview.

CappersMall.com: How many years has BetCris been in business?
BetCris: 21 years, since 1985.

CappersMall.com: How did BetCris do on the Super Bowl?
BetCris: While the Super Bowl itself was not a great day for us, it was the cap to another recorded breaking year for BetCRIS.

CappersMall.com: Describe your feelings on the state of the industry
BetCris: The industry still has a lot of growing to do. While we are facing tough obstacles at this time, the true Bookmakers are in this for the long haul and will come out much stronger.

CappersMall.com: Can you tell us why there are constant rumors out of Costa Rica concerning books being shut down?
BetCris: I would estimate that about 95% of the betting population does not frequent the online betting forums. A much larger percentage of people in the industry spend time on those forums. Rumors can be started by disgruntled employees or owners with an agenda. Often these rumors are built up into mountainous stories by employees and bettors alike. I guess it is the nature of this industry. One thing I can tell every one is we've been open since 1985. No one else can say the same.

CappersMall.com: How big of a blow was Neteller leaving the US?
BetCris: Neteller was a big blow to every one's business. However there are several other options that we are currently working with. Those options should be up and running in a short period of time.

CappersMall.com: Do you think people will get their money from Neteller?
BetCris: It appears that the US has cut off Netellers' methods to pay US based players. I believe at some point they will be allowed to pay those US clients. The time frame is the real question that no one has an answer on.

CappersMall.com: What about Pinnacle Sports? Why do you think they left?
BetCris: Only the head guys at Pinnacle know the reasoning behind their decision.

CappersMall.com: Was Pinnacle good or bad for the industry?
BetCris: Pinnacle made their decision and paid every one in a timely manner. It showed exactly how strong they are. Any time a book does the right thing; it's good for the industry.

CappersMall.com: Did BetonSports cause all of these problems?
BetCris: I don't believe so. The DoJ is going to investigate who ever they want, when ever they want. BoS was very out spoken and a publicly traded company so they obviously attracted a lot of attention.

CappersMall.com: Thoughts on the UIGEA?
BetCris: Complete hypocrisy.

CappersMall.com: Do you see US congress changing this law or making any more exemptions?
BetCris: I believe that depends on what happens with the WTO ruling.

CappersMall.com: Do you see online gambling being legalized in the US in near future?
BetCris: The only way I see it being legalized is if they are backed into a corner by the WTO ruling. That is a big IF.

CappersMall.com: Will books eventually get around the current money transfer problem in US?
BetCris: It's a safe bet that with the amount of revenue generated by this industry there will always be options to fill any gap. We are setting up several new options as we speak.

CappersMall.com: Will there be another Neteller?
BetCris: A very similar service will be open in March.

CappersMall.com: Will BetCris be buying any islands or land like was reported?
BetCris: We have no plans on buying any islands.

CappersMall.com: Tell us about the future of BetCris?
BetCris: We will continue to add new services to meet all our clients' needs and wants.

CappersMall.com: Has the industry ever suffered like it appears to be suffering now?
BetCris: The current processing difficulties that the whole industry is dealing with right now, does set us all back several years, as far as processing goes. However several years ago our industry was not a $12 billion a year industry. It will only be a short period of time before every thing is running smoother than before.

CappersMall.com: How do you see the future of online gambling in Costa Rica, Antigua and other big gambling markets?
BetCris: The industry as a whole will continue to grow. Where there is a demand, there is a market.

CappersMall.com: What do you make of the WTO ruling last week?
BetCris: There is a lot of potential from the WTO ruling. I believe we will see how that plays out in about 6 months.

CappersMall.com: Tell us about your mobile betting service?
BetCris: Our mobile betting service expands the normal methods that players have at their finger tips. Once a small application is installed on their web equipped cell phone or PDA, they can quickly place wagers from virtually any where.

CappersMall.com: Where will BetCris be this time next year?
BetCris: Like the past 21 years we will be here to serve all our clients wagering needs.

CappersMall.com: Thanks for taking the time to talk to CappersMall.com
BetCris: It's my pleasure Jack

I had lunch with Scott when I was in CR two weeks ago and we discussed the WTO situation at length. I don't think that most people realize the significance of the World Trade Organzation's ruling against the US. I believe that if it is ulimately upheld that the ruling will have a profound effect on the government's efforts to squash online wagering.

If the ruling is indeed upheld and the US government ignores it, Antigua would have the right to ignore all US patents and copyrights. This would mean that they could begin distributing unauthorized copies of music, movies, software, etc. without the fear of any reprucussions for the owners of licensees of these products, and that is just for starters. While this may sound far-fetched, there are precedents for this and the WTO is the international authority governing copyrights and patents.

Can you imagine how easy it would be for companies in Antigua to begin distributing copies of Microsoft Office and selling them for $25.00? I can not imagine that the movie, music and software companies would allow this to happen without applying a great deal on the government.
