Car negotiating is kind of like being a lawyer .
Does the salesman deserve to "Earn" your repsect being the 2nd biggest purcahse after your house , or just try and treat them like a normal person and hope they do the same to you ? Some Kramer Comebacks so far - First visit all smiles Salesman goes on blah blah here's what I can do 4 you you car this yr,make, model lets say x amt trade in ( doesn't even go out to look at it) YOU CAN OFFER ME A PRICE WITHOUT APPRAISING IT ? - to myself I can offer 10 yr oil changes all weather floor mats vs reg ones , maybe a gas card , I look at him in the eye nice and relaxed ok i'd need to see the 10 yr oil change in writing cause if I go to mechanic first visit he'll say where does it say free oil change , no offense gas card , you didn't mention a value I see a $250 admin fee here , you haven't explained what its for he pauses well its for etching the vin # onto the vehicle, ok I reply , doesn't the vin # come with car onto your lot , try again well we also have an insurance program anyone steals your car , you get full repl value for 3 years . That's nice I said ,. my Insurance policy already has that so cancel your admin fee what else can you do to bring down the price/monthly pay then he says do you know how much profit we make on this much particular car ? I said no, He said x % , I said that's nice , can you actually PROVE IT TO ME? For example if you sell it in America with U.S.A. DOLLARS , VS Canada CANADIAN DOLLARS , and ITALY IN EUROS , how does it work out to the same % or are you just talking about the dealership we are SITTING IN RIGHT NOW negotiating : ) i'll get back to you – he says Will update second visit -lol

I get the KBB retail value of whatever I'm trading and what I'm buying. Tell them I'll trade book for book + 5% up to $1000. No problem w/ them making money, just don't f*ck me.
The "extra's", car mats/gas cards/oil changes/etc, are NOT free....you ARE paying for them... Sold cars for 6 years, absolutely HATE going on a car lot. |

Are you just considering NEW cars? I do know that there isnt a lot of mark up in the new cars like maybe in the past.....If you visit several diff stores and have some prices to throw at em that will help your cause....If they can meet that price, they are gonna sell you the car...they dont want you to leave, so they are gonna try to do everything they can to get you to stay...I would also make sure you have a rate from your bank for your financing...they will try and bump your interest rate if given a chance.

I've found my most successful tactic is to
1) tell them I'm not particularly enamored to one type of car. 2) remind them how many different dealerships are in a 50 mile radius 3) and if we get to a point where negiations stall, I simply thank them for their time and get my ass out of the chair. They know if a potential customer leaves, odds are poor they'll be back.

I am selling my wifes car right now, I have had my phone ringing non stop with calls since we put in on craigslist and autotrader.com, but half of the calls are from dealerships wanting me to bring it in for it to be appraised. We are in no rush so Im not even calling dealerships back for that sh1t.
after we slang her 04 civic then we will be doing the wheeling and dealing bullshit that goes with buying a new car. Actually not looking forward to it sigh

I sold my last car to Carmax. The appraisal took 20 minutes and the offer was a bit more than the value traders at kbb.com and edmunds.com. From a buying standpoint there is so much info available today you can sort of play hardball. I used the free car buying services through my bank, which showed me list, incentives, and rebates. It also showed me what other bank members paid for the same model. After coming up with the price I wanted to pay, I emailed the Internet sales manager at 5 dealerships. 3 told me they couldn't get to my price, but come in to work out a "great deal". I didn't call them back. Dealer 4 never responded. Dealer 5 told me they could get within $249 because they had to get the vehicle out of state. I said ok, dropped by, left a $500 deposit. One week later the vehicle was there. I dropped by and wrote a check for it. The only hassle if you will was the F&I girl trying to sell me an extended warranty and trying to finance the vehicle instead of paying cash. Both only took 5 minutes so I can't complain. All in all I spent less than 3 hours buying.
