Does not it show up in a different Drive?
I unplug mine all the time, moving from comp to comp.
Do you use the Safely Remove Hardware program?

Go to control panel, admin tools, computer management. You can pick what letter you want the drive to be

If it doesn't show up at all you will have to assign a drive letter to it under computer management. This happens all the time with usb hot-swappable drives.

Example: If you plug it in and it doesn't show up it's probably because it tried to use E: or whatever your cd-rom drive is. You will just have to assign a different letter to the usb drive.

Plug it in to a different USB port than you used originally. It'll probably take a different drive letter.
Maybe reboot the computer with the drive plugged in.

I know on mine, it would conflict if I used a usb stick and the external harddrive at the same time.

A. what program are you using to play the music from?
B. Does your puter have multiple usb ports? If so each port is assigned a letter and if the program attempting to play the files uses a library assigned to a certain drive you will have to locate the file via a my computer.
C. what type of files did your buddy put on the external, if the files are right protected some programs won't recognize the files and they wont show up on a library.
D. finally if your computer keeps saying it found new hardware, it is recognizing the drive and is attempting to install a driver to use it. So the usb cable isnt bad. click on the icon to load the driver and then after is load click on the drive to see the contents. Your music files should be there and then its just a matter of using your player program to play them.
Hope this helps.

all working now ,

: )

just got a new usb cord for like $ 7
at puter outlet store

all it takes is one of those little usb pins to
come lose , or damaged somehow

like i was telling this problem to my IT guy at office at work ,

he says when someones keyboard
stops working ,
could be keyboard , usb connection ,

they buy so many keyboards
its cheaper just to replace "both"

than to spend money and time to
"figure out" how to fix it

lol
