Current state of popular American music

Has it ever been worse in history? I am basically talking about the songs/albums that are hitting the chart

The Top 10 Local Albums/CD's here in no particular order, National is fairly similar

Daughtry, Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana Soundtrack, Now That's What I Call Music 31 , 31 really? Taylor Swift, Twista, Black Eyed Peas, Kings of Leon (who I like) and the new Jack White Supergroup Dead Weather (who I hope to see locally Monday) , Green Day.

This is really what people are listening to? Is it just me or is that a horrible list?

too much generic stuff, prerecorded sounds turned over to spoon feed the public who are becoming less and less cerebral by the minute

Everything is just so different now. When I was younger, acts like Prince, The Police, Bruce, Madonna, MJ, etc. would hold on to the #1 album spot for 10, 20, even 30 weeks in a row. There just weren't as many bands. Through the 90's the number of total acts expanded exponentially, and the Rap category became huge, and the new sound of Country became huge, and every college kid was digging deeper for unheard-of bands just to be different. All of a sudden, tastes were all over the place, but how many CDs can one person buy? Now that anyone with a computer can produce and distribute music, it's even more divided. If you want to make it to the top of the charts, you have to play to the widest commercial audience (Black Eyed Peas) or play to kids (Jonas Bros) or play to the peeps who can't figure it out on their own (Now That's What I Call Music). Even those trips to the top are short lived. There's just too much going on. If there's ever going to be an album that captures the #1 spot for 25-30 weeks again, I don't think that group exists right now. Too many acts (good and bad) splitting the purchases and downloads. (It reminds me of the scenario top 2 Heismann candidates on the same team splitting the vote, and the 3rd best guy wins it, just because he's on a different team.)

There should be a mandatory 80's station and a mandatory 90's grunge rock station in all markets in America......

My sirius satellite radio died this week and, while awaiting the arrival of my replacement, I've been relegated to listening to today's nonsense on the radio.............horrible!

Gerk: Looks like a poor man's Mike Vick in your avy!
