Dallas Cowboys + Yankees Joint Venture
Yankees owner George Steinbrenner shakes hands with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after agreeing to start a new company focused "catering, concessions, retail merchandising and other facility management enterprises."
The Yankees and Dallas Cowboys, the most high-profile teams in their sports, officially went into business yesterday, forming a group called Legends Hospitality Management. The enterprise obviously will add to both teams' already stuffed pockets, and it's not quite clear how the average fan will even notice this change when the new Yankee Stadium opens next year. But George Steinbrenner considered this an important enough venture to offer the most rare of endorsements: an appearance on videotape. The Yankees' titular "Boss," who has turned into a recluse of sorts, met with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Oct. 13 and taped a message that lasted about a minute. The message aired yesterday at the Manhattan news conference to introduce Legends. In Steinbrenner's office, the Yankees' principal owner wore sunglasses and spoke passionately about the need to take care of the team's fans. Jones sat to his left and echoed many of Steinbrenner's sentiments as they praised each other for their success. "That's right!" Steinbrenner said at one point. "For the fans!" Steinbrenner spoke mostly in short phrases, and at times, he appeared to slightly slur his words. The image was consistent with that of Steinbrenner in recent years: a man who is not anywhere near as robust as he was even five years ago. "He's doing fine," Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees' co-chairman and George's younger son, said of his father. "You can draw your own conclusions [from the tape]. He's 78. He's slowing down, as we know. All I can tell you ... they had a great meeting. They both had a great time." "George Steinbrenner and his family have taken the ball and run with it," said Jones, who said he has known Steinbrenner for about 30 years. "They've given every ounce of their God-given abilities they have to make the Yankees something very special. That's why the Dallas Cowboys wanted to be partners with the New York Yankees." Steinbrenner appeared sporadically at spring training this past year and made small talk with reporters but conducted no television interviews. He pulled the initial "Countdown Lever" in the Yankees' home opener, and right before the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, Steinbrenner put himself on the national stage by agreeing to be the centerpiece of a pregame ceremony. In both cases, however, Steinbrenner avoided speaking in public. Now that he has officially designated sons Hal and Hank as his successors - Hal does actual work while Hank largely limits his output to media interviews - there is no longer a public clamor to hear what George Steinbrenner has to say. Yesterday, both the Yankees and Cowboys had only good things to say about the owner. And in what used to be the norm but is now newsworthy for its infrequency, George Steinbrenner put in his two cents. |

Cowboys, Yankees and Raiders all pretty much teams of the past that have had minimal succsess in the last decade. All making headlines, OFF the field now a days. I am betting that Al Davis feels left out considering he is also a blowhard owner that has a HUGE raiders merchendise market |
