Daughter of Robert Horry Dies

Daughter of former Rockets forward Horry dies at 17 after battle with lifelong illness

Ashlyn Horry, daughter of former Rockets forward Robert Horry, died today at age 17 after a battle with a rare genetic condition.

Robert Horry helped the Rockets win two NBA titles. (Chronicle file)

Ashlyn Horry suffered from a disorder called the 1p36 Deletion Syndrome, which caused a partial deletion of her number 1 chromosome.

Robert Horry and his wife, Keva, established The Ashley Horry Foundation in 2008. One of the organization’s primary objectives is to help support families of children battling similar illnesses.

In 2001, Horry told the Chronicle’s Fran Blinebury that Ashlyn was born with a genetic defect that renders her unable to walk or eat without assistance and unable to speak.

“I don’t know the official name, ” Horry said at the time. “Just that it’s long and it’s difficult.”

Robert Horry was drafted out of Alabama by the Rockets in 1992 and played for them for four seasons, helping Houston win championships in 1994 and 1995. He played for four teams during a 16-year career, winning seven championships and earning the nickname “Big Shot Bob” for his ability to hit clutch shots in big games.

Being a Houston guy I had heard the story of his daughter on the local news years ago. Always a big fan of this guy. Even named one of my cats "Horry". Very sad to hear this. Thoughts and prayers to the Horry family.
