Decent affordable whiskey?

With all the damn drunks on this board, I figured this was the place to ask.

My cousin and his crew drink a lot of Jack Daniels and I wanted to take an upgrade out to those guys when I go.
But, they may just end up shooting it anyway so I don't want to really spend more than like $40 for a bottle either.
Any suggestions for an affordable upgrade?
Any thoughts on something like the single barrel Jack, gentleman jack or makers mark?

thanks.

probably a dumb question but do you guys chill and/or mix your knob creek or just drink it straight?
i pretty much stick to JD which i either shot or mix but not fond of attempting it straight up at room temp lol

I mainly drink beer.

when I do whiskey its a shot. Not something I'm gonna chill with by a fire.

If I am not mistaken, the Jim Beam family of distillers makes Makers Mark, Knob Creek and really most of the premium bourbons.

FWIW Quad, Jack Daniels is not a bourbon.
