Detroit population falls 25 per cent in past decade

Detroit's population has fallen to its lowest level since 1910, the Detroit Free Press is reporting.

The most recent census figures released to the paper show that the Motor City is now home to 713,777 people, a 25 per cent drop in the last decade.

The numbers show that Detroit lost 238,270 residents since 2001, an average of one resident every 22 minutes. Detroit's population peaked in 1950 with almost 1.9 million.

At the state level, due to auto industry troubles, Detroit's decline contributed to the overall population drop of Michigan, the only U.S. state to see a net population loss since 2000. Michigan's population dropped by roughly 54,000 residents to fewer than 9.9 million, a 0.6 per cent decline, compared to the country as a whole, where the population grew by 9.7 per cent.
