I did on my HDTV and it paid off. 4th year of a 5 year extended the display got all messed up. They sent a tech out to my house to re-solder a bunch of stuff in the guts.

Normally though I pass. If you buy from Sams or Costco you pretty much get a lifetime warranty anyway. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee with no time limits.

I buy them. Lets say my refrigerator went out and the warranty expired. By the time I call a repairman he charges $80.00 Then tells me the compressor froze up and a new one will cost $700.00. I just bought all new appliances in November with the 5 year extended warranty on them for around $250.00. The way I look at it is, the way they make things now a days I`d rather be safe than sorry.

Overall a big profit center for stores, therefore not in your interest in the long term. When we used to sell extended warranties on computers, the underwriter would give us 75% of the warranty price back as our cut.

Bang on, Davydave.

I've never bought the extended warranty on anything and I've never regretted it (so far). [knocking on wood]

I use to always buy them, but now it depends on the item. If the item is say a big ticket one, I would just to make me feel better. However, I thought I read that most times extended warranties are cash grabs, and never really help you. As things will break when its over anyway, but I still do it just to give me extra insurance.
