Do you think sports players play knowing the spread of their game?

It's occured to me watching several games lately that players seem to know what their spread is, and at times seem to make a special effort to cover that spread.

Now, in no way am I suggesting a conspiracy here. No bookies or mobsters out there ****ing around trying to manipulate them. None of that.

But these guys have friends. Brothers, uncles, people they've known all their lives. They know they are betting on them.

Do you think they at times make an extra and sometimes unnecessary effort to cover spreads?

Again, this is not the "negative" side of throwing games. I'm wondering about whether at times guys make an effort to cover to make their friends some money. Hard to call it a conspiracy if they try "extra hard" in a particular game.

Thoughts?

I think sometimes teams can play according to the line, but thats just an assumption that is probably wrong but does occur.

Ive heard it more with coaches trying to pull it off for the Alma Mater. I would estimate better then 65% of "athletes" check the point spreads etc...before a game.

A point spread, total, moneyline is psychological on many angles

I have seen several times lately where a team/player dashes down court for that last second shot even though they are already up -- or down --by 12.

Now sure I suppose on occasion they just want to "shoot one more time". But it started to make me wonder, it seems a bit obvious but again, it's really something you can't argue with the player. "what, i did it for pride, etc."...

Woody Hayes would've done something about that dash.

It will always be hard to draw the line between pride for example and intent. C-bball has got to be the easiest to manipulate. I would say no way for the NFL and baseball is baseball 162 games, it wouldn't matter either way.

college basketball though...so many games with athletes that are 17-23 years of age. So much to be said about that

If a game is fixed or manipulated it's not to favor Vegas IMO. It's to rip vegas off with a huge moneyline. This stuff doesnt happen like it use to back in the day but...

I'm 25 I can think of about 15 ways I, myself could possibly get a game rigged with a local college/university. I dont condone bad behavior, I dont engage in bad behavior and I dont surround myself with those that do.
Firearms and threats are intimidating--money,bitches,drugs are enticing. The star PG lives in that dorm right there and he walks to class everyday at such and such time. It almost sounds to easy. I realize that could be read as borderline psychotic but trust me Im a loving kind person and wouldnt harm a fly

This stuff must occur somewhere, probably here in the city I live. Cali, NYC so many small schools getting lined games with fat moneylines.

You and I the bettor should never be concerned with this. Unless you associate with criminals that do this stuff, it doesnt matter. Plus, it doesnt go on like it did back in the day but manipulation does occur. To what degree or from where it originates is pure speculation. I'm not going to turn my head and say that players and/or 3rd parties arent manipulating games. It must happen sometimes, I'm sure.

So, if it does occur I'm sure we all have caught the side that was going to win anyway. If we see something that is fishy we take notice, but again where is that line drawn?

I read a book that discussed betting "You don't take notice to the game you covered by 1 or 2 points because 'you where suppose to win that one'" He would go on to say "its when you lose by .5 or 1 that you take notice" and the thought of a fix for instance takes place.

The does of Meyer Lansky and the like are long gone.

"I'm talking about an F-I-X... sure thing"

Best regards,
some young Caucasian kid making speculation about score manipulations
