Don't always trust the race caller

Jockey Paul Townsend steered Golden Silver to an easy victory in Fairyhouse's Tattersalls Ireland Dan Moore Memorial Handicap Chase this afternoon at odds of 9/2, but in-running betting on the race proved to be almost as exciting than the race itself.

The race was relatively uneventful until the fifth last when both Mansony and Mighty Massini fell bringing down the unlucky Sky's The Limit.

The course commentator mistakenly called Golden Silver a faller, instead of Mighty Massini, who raced in similar red colours.

What followed on betfair was little short of in-running carnage, as many players attempted to lay the top weight,thinking the gelding was safely out of the race.

A total of £90 was traded at the ceiling price of 1000, together with over £1000 at odds ranging from 10 to 260.

Those who were prepared to take the word of the commentator rather than trust their own eyes were never in a position to limit the damage, as Golden Silver was always trading at a short price, once it was evident he was still in the race.

The incident at Fairyhouse was not the only shock of the day, as at Ffos Las 100/1 outsider Fayre Bella came late to win the Rwyth Maiden Stakes for three year olds, rewarding those that had taken advantage of the £526 traded on the winner at betfair's 1000.
