Drunk Driver Keeps Driving After A Person He Hits & Kills Lands In His Front Seat

Man's Body Found in Car after Struck, alleged intoxicated driver taken into custody

KRISTINE GALVAN
Reporter

HOUSTON - Investigators say a driver was so intoxicated that he struck a man walking along the Gulf Freeway with his Mazda 626 and never realized the victim's body fell into the passenger side of the car.

The accident took place before 1 a.m. Tuesday on the Gulf Freeway southbound lanes near the Fuqua Street exit.

A Harris County Precinct 8 deputy constable stopped the driver of the black 2000 Mazda 626 on suspicion of driving while intoxicated on Beamer Road near Kirkvalley Drive, less than two miles away from where the accident took place. The deputy constable saw the body on the floorboard of the front passenger seat and questioned the driver.

Investigators say the driver told them he thought his car struck something but did not know what it was, although the windshield was shattered and the body of the victim was inside the car.

The body was found with one severed knee and investigators later found the rest of the leg on the Gulf Freeway where the accident first took place. Traffic was shut down for several on the southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway near the Sam Houston Tollway during the accident investigation.

The driver was identified Tuesday by the Houston Police Department as James John Onak, 49. He will be charged with failure to stop and render aid (fatality) and driving while intoxicated.

The victim was wearing a work uniform from a Subway restaurant and investigators say he had likely finished his work shift and was driving home when he experienced trouble with his Ford Explorer. They say he was struck by the Mazda 626 as he walked toward a nearby fuel station.

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF PICKING GOLF WINNERS
1. CLOSER with CHARACTER. Certain guys see the finish line and cross it and others are destined for second place.
2. RELAXED CONFIDENCE, FOCUS and a HUNGER to win. It's a mental game and their mind has to be in the right frame with a determination and focus. As Harry Vardon said: "To play well you must feel tranquil and at peace. I have never been troubled by nerves in golf because I felt I had nothing to lose and everything to gain."
3. COURSE. Does the course layout favor the strengths of the golfer and does it expose their weaknesses. Previous form can change immediately for those who feel comfortable on a course and its greens.
