DVD Recorders - Electronics junkies

I don't know how new they are but I see that they now have DVD recorders with internal hard drives. I've been reading up on these for the past hour. From what I am reading, they seem to be like Tivo but without the monthly Tivo costs. I don't have Tivo now but I hear its the greatest invention since birth control.

You can record shows while watching different shows and you don't have to use the expensive DVD-Rs. Does anybody have one of these? I'd like to pick one up with a 160gb hard drive, hopefully for less than $200. I'm looking on Ebay now.

Any additional insight would be appreciated.

you'll never watch tv the same way again. i never watch shows live anymore. i either watch them after they are recorded or start them 10-20 minutes into the program so you can FF through all the commercials. Good stuff!

I appreciate the help. Are you talking about dvd-r's or recorders?

BoldT - I don't have HD as of now. That is also something that I might get within the next few years.

bignutts - I am using an HD PVR through my cable company. They are raping me for $20 a month for it, but it's such an incredible convenience that it's too hard to part with.

I've got Windows Media Center on my laptop, so I am considering using that to record shows, but haven't gotten around to testing it yet.

I can't watch tv on my computer. I have read about FTA but haven't tried it yet.

I think Tivo with Comcast is $10 a month. Sounds like you are getting raped by your provider.

The way you are talking it seems like you go though alot. Just looking to help, I don't ever take advantage of what the company offers which sucks.

But they just rasied the monthly rate up $10 with out notice going to direct TV in a couple of months, you can negotiate somewhat with these cable companies.

Thanks boldt! I really don't use too many dvd-rs. I probably would if I had a dvd recorder though. Right now I will burn the occassional movie (completely legal, of course) but that's the extent of my dvd-r needs at the moment.
