I disapprove, the fence relies on pain as a deterrent. Which means it's designed to hurt the dog and that's a wrong way of training and not cool.

Good point....but so does nipping his neck, or slapping his nose with the newspaper....but does it work to the point that the dog stops the behavior so he does not get continually get hurt and learns not to run out in front of cars.

If the dog cannot be conditioned I agree

So back to my original question

Are they effective? what brand

Know plenty of people that use these and they are very effective. The dogs I have seen it work with realize where the boundary is quickly and very rarely (if ever) get shocked.

We used it for our dobermanns and never had an issue of them busting the barrier. Obviously the downside is you can't keep other dogs out of your yard.

Innotek is the brand we have used most. There customer service is top notch as well.
