ESPN Fires Adnan Virk

ESPN rising star Adnan Virk has been fired by the network, sources told The Post.

Virk is accused of leaking confidential company information to the media on multiple occasions, according to sources.

When ESPN investigated the allegations, it felt that Virk failed to fully cooperate.

He recently signed a new multi-year contract.

“Adnan Virk no longer works at ESPN,” ESPN vice president Josh Krulewitz told The Post.

Virk could not immediately be reached for comment. CAA, Virk’s agency, declined comment.

On Friday, Virk was escorted off the Bristol campus. The specific nature of the information Virk chose to share is unknown at this time.

During his move up the ESPN ladder, Virk had become a lead studio host on its college football game coverage. He was a regular host on “Baseball Tonight” and college basketball. He was one of the main fill-in hosts on ESPN Radio. He had developed a podcast, called “Cinephile,” about movies.

Virk, 40, attended college in Toronto. He grew up in Canada after he emigrated from Pakistan. After a TV career in Canada, he joined ESPN, where his likable personality and smooth delivery quickly saw him rise up in the company.

Like all ESPN/Disney employees, Virk was required annually to take compliance training dealing with privacy and how to handle sensitive information.

"ESPN had a conference call about “Sunday Night Baseball” that the network believes Virk tipped off to Awful Announcing. Sources said the “premeditated nature” of the outreach alarmed ESPN.

"When the conference call took place, Virk was not on the whole time, and the specific information about the future schedule for baseball was actually not discussed.

"Virk followed up right after the call with Phil Orlins, the senior coordinating producer, asking specific questions about the direction of baseball at ESPN in regards to its scheduling. The questions matched what appeared later that day in the Awful Announcing article.

Sorry to say mikki, but it is.

When I worked for FOX, we had to sign a new confidentiality agreement every year. We knew what would happen if we didn't follow their guidelines.

The contract is between an employee and an employer, in which the employee agrees not to disclose or profit from any proprietary information related to company operations. A legally binding contract in which one party promises to keep trade secrets and not to disclose secrets without authorization from a superior.

I'm sure Adnan is going to get a lawyer and fight the charges he's accused of. A producer friend of mine at ESPN told me that Adnan had just signed a new contract and in all likelihood ESPN will not be giving him a single dime in severance pay...OUCH!

He will be suing. ESPN leaks stuff all the time. However, they did not make anything off of it...so they fired him.

Is this ESPN fault probably not...was he forth coming...probably not....

He will lose, ESPN will lose....and the lawyers will win.

ESPN after last years layoffs will have no shortage of people that will give them information to help his lawsuit including people higher up who leaked things for their own interest.

My guess is Kirk will land on CBS sports very soon...

Fired ESPN sportscaster Adnan Virk denies he leaked any confidential or proprietary information that caused his termination.

In a statement Virk texted to The Post on Tuesday night, Virk said he and his lawyers are trying to reach a settlement with ESPN.

“Suffice it to say, that I believe that I did nothing wrong that would justify my termination, and I categorically deny that I leaked any confidential or proprietary information,” said Virk, who recently signed a two-year extension.

“There is considerably more that I would like to say regarding my tenure with ESPN and the circumstances surrounding my termination. However, I believe that, for now, it is in my and the Company’s best interest to concentrate on attempting to resolve our differences, rather than engaging in a very public war of words.”

Virk was let go at the beginning of February after ESPN accused him of leaking stories to the website Awful Announcing. ESPN, according to sources, felt Virk acted in a “premeditated” way, tipping off a reporter from the site.

The Post has independently confirmed Virk was a source for the story about ESPN’s baseball plans. Ben Koo, the writer on the story, declined to confirm his source.

In the Awful Announcing story that preceded Virk’s firing, the site reported ESPN was moving its “Sunday Night Baseball” from 8 p.m. to 7 p.m. due to MLB relenting on a contractual clause that called for a certain amount of “Baseball Tonight” shows during the regular season.

ESPN and Virk’s lawyers will have to reconcile their varying interpretations of what is confidential and proprietary information.

Virk’s side is also questioning ESPN’s feeling that Virk leaked to reporters on multiple occasions.

ESPN declined comment on Tuesday night.

ESPN felt Virk went out of his way to ask one of his bosses pointed questions about the company’s baseball plans that had not been covered in any meetings. The information then appeared hours later on Awful Announcing.

“Much of what has been reported about my termination from ESPN is false and, I think, defamatory,” Virk said. “We – meaning me and my lawyers, Wajahat Laiq and Neal Brickman, and lawyers for ESPN – are currently attempting to amicably resolve my leaving ESPN. I think that, while we are attempting to settle our differences, it is not productive for me to advocate my positions or to assert any affirmative claims in the press.”
