Ever watch Rugby
I just watched my first match tonight by a friends house that had a dish. This sport is crazy, it is kind of like football with no helmets. The teams just pound on each other, the game has non-stop action from start to finish.
I do not understand the full rules of the game, I do suguest if you ever have the chance to watch a game take full advantage, you will enjoy. The players get nuts in this sport. This may be a sport where you will find nobody over the age of 35 playing. Rough game for sure.

LOL...I play rugby for High School team, and out side of school...it is a great sport to watch..I love it when I get to smash someone so hard they get dazed...or I love running at 6'3" 300lbs guys that just started to play and are scared shitless when you give them the stare of death...like they are the only one you are going to hit and ur running at them full speed...that is good...
**not to forget when ur watching and the camera is zoomed in to just the guy with the ball...and then he gets hit hard out of almost no where...the camera guy doesnt react fast enough and keeps going down the field..lol...

Probably watched and played more games of rugby in my life than I've had hot meals
If anyone has any questions about rules or anything about the game I would be happy to answer them. Rugby league is quickly surpassing rugby union (2 different sports) for mine as a spectator sport. If u ever get the chance watch a NRL match or State of Origin (rugby league). The best quality rugby union matches to watch are Super 14 matches between the top teams when all the Internationals are playing for their teams. Also test matches between New Zealand and Australia or South Africa are amazing viewing.

I like Rugby.
Dave: I don't watch it much, but is there a difference between Rugby and Australian Rules Football? - I used to watch ARF all the time on ESPN back in the day. Loved it!! |

HUGE difference mate between Aussie Rules Football (AFL) and rugby league and rugby. They don't have much in common, almost like comparing soccer to rugby. AFL is a sport basically only played in Australia, sure it is played in other parts of the world but very little. Alot like your American football in that respect. In AFL the object is to kick the ball between two posts to get a goal which is worth 6 points. They kick the ball and sometimes hand pass it to obtain that. In rugby union it is far more brutal and there is far more contact, as well as totally different rules and objectives. If u have never seen a game check it out either that or rugby league both are great. If u have never seen it u will find the rules very confusing though. Rugby league is an easier game to understand rules wise. Rugby union is more of a global game many countries in the world have national team whereas in rugby league only really 4-5 Nations take it seriously.

big difference between aussie rules (afl...had the acronymn long before arena football came along) and rubgy...the main difference is that scoring can be by kicking or by what is called "a try" in rugby...whereas afl you only score by kicking...i understand both games but i can't explain them because of my limited viewing...it is easy to catch on to understand while watching, but to actually explain the games is a different thing...afl isnt really a contact sport either compared to the physicality that is endured in a rugby match |

not sure about that dave...american football has been really popularized due to stat tracking and fantasy football...the stats that are kept for rugby really wouldnt be that interesting to american football fans...but for those who watch american football due to the fact they think there is big hitting and what not, then they would be able to accept rugby for what it is if they really had an open and international mind |

1 of the best sports on earth, both in terms of watching and playing.
Unfortunatly here in the states it gets no love and is near impossible to watch for free. Id buy setanta sports but they show more soccer then rugby, and the only soccer I watch is the world cup. Quote:
Not true, football has been huge in the states well before fantasy football. True fantasy football may draw some more interest (which is true for other sports that offer fantasy) but it would be huge without it. Quote:
I watched a couple of games on FSN with freinds after school before I ever had the chance to play. We had no idea what the hell was going on in terms of penalties, but we watched it anways because it was fast pace and hard hiting. I got to play in high school so i learned all the rules which in turn made it even better to watch. Went to college where we had CSTV (college sports television) and they were showing the college semis and finals. We had 25 kids in 1 dorm room watching it and I was telling them what was going on. Everyone thought it looked cool before they understood it, once they understood it they all thought it was amazing. If they marketed it right in America it would blow up. Get solid experienced announcers that know whats going on, are great at explaining the game and get along. A ton of matches are played durring the football offseason, there is no better sport in the world to fill the gap. Market it as hard hiting, fast pace big time rivals and americans would eat it up. ESPN already owns channels that play it, if they steped up they could make a lot of money off of it.

Well rugby union has a strong global governing body known as the IRB (International rugby board) unlike some other sports they are no mugs and trying their best to develop rugby in nations like the US and Canada. Progress is being made, If you compare now to 20 years ago there has been a significant increase in playing numbers and resources in North America. Obviously a long way to go. I know there is great work being done by some ex pat NZ / Australian coaches over there. The USA and Canada will both have a team in the World Cup this year, neither a chance of getting anywhere but as I said progress is being made albeit slowely. I love seeing other countries improve as far as I'm concerned the more that get better to compete with the world powerhouses the better

The Haka is (if im correct) is one of the crazier things to witness in sports. Rugby makes football look weak with regards to hitting, tackling and general aggression.
I dont understand why they don't broadcast it in the states, I think it would be pretty popular. Only time I can watch it is when I go to florida though
