Exercise question

does anyone know is it better to run 2 miles twice a day..or 4 miles once a day? or is it the same?

someone told me that doing extended periods of aerobic exercise will start to burn muscle instead of fat.

as long as you get proper ration of protein it wont burn muscle only fat

without the help of drugs its next to impossible save the 2% genetically blessed to both gain muscle and lose fat simultaneously though

I personnally run 5 miles every other day and lift with lower weight higher reps diet is very important esp. protien. I think if your not consuming proper amt. of calories you will lose some muscle mass.

do the distance all at once do save wear and tear on your body

I run 4 miles twice a week and usually 5-7 once a week. Almost always try to do it M-W-F and take weekend off

You couldn't tell now but I was actually a runner for about 18 yrs and put in around 50-60 miles/week.
No matter how much mileage I was doing I never felt like my body was recovered when I would try and put a 2nd run in the same day.
And if you're going to lift/run on the same day then do the lifting first and cardio after.

Any program is better than nothing though so whatever it is you decide to do just keep doing it.

Average person does not begin to burn fat until around 20 mins of cardio. Theoretically youd be better off with the 5 once a day b/c 20 mins of your second workout would be used building up to the point where you start burning fat.

Body will burn fat before it burns muscle, also will convert available protein into carbs before it burns the protein in muscle.

Your not building muscle mass doing cardio for extended periods of time, acception being those who build muscle very easily and run hills. Do uncover the muscle you already have though, which is why some think it does build mass.

go all 4 miles at once

the thinking about this is that your first 2 mile run will be your more intense run; therefore tiring you out, and making your second 2 mile run less than desirable

also, pack on the protein... around .8 - 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight

you want most your energy towards resistance/weight training which burns fat even hours after your workout

I absolutely agree. It's just too hard to get a good weight workout in after a cardio workout too. You'll get better results with a more intense weight training day than if you run a few miles then try and do it.
