do you think that maybe a certain amount of knowledge is assumed before you rattle off questions?

try google for starters

nick, for starters, the US's rules and laws are different than that in Canada

I suggest if you have some dough to invest, to make an appointment with a financial advisor at your institution, they are professional and they *should* know what they are doing.

In the meantime, read up on some financial subjects (books or Internet) and try to educate yourself. You don't have to be a pro but it helps to know where and how your money is invested

Can you give me an example of the differences? Is this going to be another reason to learn french and move to Canada?

Kellos, here are some for starters:

Personal tax rates are higher in Canada

Canada has an "exemption" system for earnings from the active business of foreign subsidiaries.

Canadian shareholders do not owe each other a fiduciary duty as there is no "entire fairness" standard, in contrast to some state laws in the U.S.

etc

You can google for more ideas or talk to your lawyer/financial advisor.
